Building and maintaining strong relationships is more important than ever in today’s fast-paced and increasingly remote work environment. President, CEO, and Managing Partner of Adopt Technologies, Brett Helgeson, sat down for an insightful conversation on the Sunny Silver Linings podcast to discuss his approach to leadership, culture, and fostering relationships within his company and with clients. His unique journey—from commercial construction to IT—has given him valuable lessons on what it takes to succeed in business, particularly in a people-centric industry. This article explores Brett’s top strategies for creating a value-driven company culture and maintaining meaningful connections in a hybrid work environment.
Brett’s entrepreneurial journey began early, working in his family’s hospitality business. However, it wasn’t until he started his commercial construction company that he truly stepped into the role of a business owner. After running his construction business for nearly a decade, Brett significantly shifted when he purchased an IT company handling his contracting IT needs. This transition allowed him to apply his business acumen to a new industry, where he focused on scaling the business, not by being a technician, but by building strong relationships and empowering his team to succeed.
“I didn’t go to school for computers,” Brett said during the podcast. “That allowed me to focus on building the business rather than getting stuck on the technical side.” His fresh perspective enabled him to focus on growing a business and prioritizing internal and client relationships.
Even without background experience in IT, Brett Helgeson acquired and grew an IT company successfully and efficiently. His top strategies for doing this were focused on people using relationships to build off a solid foundation.
One of Brett’s most important lessons as a leader is the power of delegation. He emphasizes the need to hire and trust the right people to carry out their roles effectively. “Hiring people you can empower and trust to perform those roles well takes a lot of burden off business leaders,” Brett explains. Leaders can focus on the bigger picture and strategic growth by delegating responsibilities.
Brett’s second key takeaway from his entrepreneurial journey is the importance of constantly building new relationships. In his early career in construction, he admits he didn’t spend enough time fostering new relationships. “In the IT business, I realized how important it is always to look for new clients and partners,” he shares. This mindset shift helped him cultivate a pipeline of new opportunities, allowing his company to grow sustainably.
For Brett, a company’s success hinges on its people. He believes that employees want more than just a paycheck—they want to feel valued, grow personally and professionally, and contribute to something meaningful. At Adopt Technologies, Brett and his team focus on creating an open, honest, and transparent culture where employees are encouraged to voice their opinions and help shape the company’s direction.
“We’re a very relationship-driven business, and that extends to our employees,” Brett says. “They want to grow personally and professionally, and we focus on creating an environment where they feel empowered and trusted.”
Adopt Technologies hires based on core values, ensuring new employees align with the company’s vision. These values include teamwork, integrity, security-mindedness, innovation, and care. By fostering a culture of support and care, Brett ensures that his employees feel professionally and personally valued. He also recognizes the importance of providing employees with tools and resources to help them navigate challenges in their personal lives, offering support when needed.
The shift to remote and hybrid work during the pandemic presented a new challenge: maintaining relationships and company culture without the benefit of in-person interactions. Brett quickly adapted by implementing consistent communication strategies, including regular all-hands meetings and promoting face-to-face Zoom interactions.
While remote work has challenges, Brett believes that regular communication and video meetings help maintain the emotional connection and trust that are so important in a team. “You can’t replace the water cooler talk,” Brett admits, but virtual face-to-face interactions help build the emotional intelligence needed for solid relationships.
Looking to the future, Brett identifies cybersecurity threats and the rise of AI as both challenges and opportunities for the MSP industry. With cyber risks on the rise, Brett emphasizes the importance of being “security-minded,” leveraging the latest tools and technologies to protect his business and clients.
In addition, he sees AI, like ChatGPT, as a game-changing technology that can enhance efficiency and offer new solutions. While there are concerns about how AI might displace specific roles, Brett views it as an opportunity to focus on tasks where human interaction is irreplaceable. “It’s amazing what AI-based solutions can bring to the table,” Brett says, stressing the importance of embracing these innovations.
Brett Helgeson’s focus on relationships with clients or employees has been crucial to his success as an entrepreneur. He has scaled his business and fostered long-term partnerships by building a culture based on trust, care, and continuous growth. Maintaining these connections in today’s remote and hybrid work environments is more critical than ever. Brett’s leadership offers a blueprint for how to do it successfully. Whether navigating challenges like cybersecurity threats or embracing new technologies like AI, Brett’s commitment to relationship-building remains at the core of his business strategy.
