When Dr. Timiebi U. Aganaba, DCL., a space lawyer who went to law school in Nigeria, enters a room, she does so with a presence that’s impossible to ignore. A specialist in science and technology policy and a thought leader in space governance, she’s as accomplished as she is inspiring. Her journey from law school in Nigeria to becoming an assistant professor at Arizona State University (ASU) with a focus on space law and policy exemplifies how passion and determination can redefine what’s possible.
This article highlights key insights from her recent appearance on The Elephant in the Room Podcast, where she shared her story, her mission to make space exploration more inclusive, and her thoughts on overcoming self-limiting beliefs.
Dr. Aganaba’s path to space law began unexpectedly. While pursuing her legal studies in Nigeria, she was the first hire in the legal affairs department at the Nigerian Space Agency. This was a pivotal experience: “I knew nothing about space except for one childhood trip to NASA,” she recalled. However, her role required her to craft Nigeria’s position on issues such as space debris and satellite capacity. This unexpected opportunity ignited a passion that led her to pursue further education at the International Space University in France.
At ISU, Dr. Aganaba realized she had a unique perspective. As someone with British, Canadian, and Nigerian nationalities, she stood out in the global space community, bridging gaps between technical experts, policymakers, and diverse cultures.
Dr. Aganaba is a fierce advocate for celebrating the achievements of women in space. Reflecting on the 2023 theme for World Space Week, “Women in Space,” she emphasized the importance of visibility: “Even though people say, ‘All lives matter,’ there are moments where you need to highlight specific groups. This year, we celebrated the barriers women have overcome in space—and those achievements are incredibly inspiring.”
As a Black woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, Dr. Aganaba acknowledges the barriers but focuses on turning challenges into opportunities. Her mindset is clear: “Why can’t I be the Black woman who gets showcased? I walk into every room with the belief that I’ll leave an unforgettable impression.”
One of Dr. Aganaba’s missions is to make space exploration relevant and relatable to local communities. As she puts it, “Think global, act local. Yes, space is a global concept, but if your neighbor doesn’t benefit from it, what’s the point? My work focuses on translating big ideas like space debris and exploration into concepts that matter to local economies.”
This perspective shapes her work at ASU, where she’s helping lead a $1 billion mission to explore a metallic asteroid. Her role extends beyond technical considerations to address equity and fairness in the emerging space economy.
Dr. Aganaba’s philosophy on fear is one of her most empowering lessons. “Fear is a habit,” she said, recounting advice from her mother. “Once you recognize it as such, you can break it. When I feel fear, I ask myself, ‘Is this a real threat or just a pattern of behavior?’ Often, fear signals that you’re pushing yourself toward something great.”
Her confidence and self-awareness inspire her students and peers alike. Whether mentoring young professionals or addressing global audiences, Dr. Aganaba encourages everyone to lean into their strengths and embrace their unique gifts.
As she continues her work at ASU and with organizations like the SETI Institute, Dr. Aganaba is focused on local impact. She’s committed to ensuring that Arizona benefits from the innovations she’s helping to drive on a global scale, stating, “It’s been great exploring the world, but impact starts where you live. I want my community to see the tangible results of my work.”
Dr. Timiebi U. Aganaba’s story is a testament to the power of determination, humility, and vision. By bridging cultures, disciplines, and perspectives, she’s not only shaping the future of space governance but also inspiring a new generation to dream big and act boldly. As she reminds us, “Nothing is beyond us if we’re willing to explore, listen, and connect.”
